Around Stirling

Our first stop today was Doune Castle. We had decided to visit it partly because it was used to film quite a lot of the castle scenes from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. There is a free audio guide narrated by Terry Jones. It did not disappoint, a great mixture of the history of the castle and Monty Python references.

We resisted the temptation to buy the coconuts even with the gentleman in the shop assuring us that we would be amazed at the number they sell!

We were planning to visit Loch Lomond and perhaps do a Loch cruise, but someone had suggested that we look at Inchmahome Priory which is on an island in the Lake of Menteith. The weather had turned a little more Scottish and we foolish Australians had left our hotel without our jackets so we decided to visit the Priory instead of venturing out onto Loch Lomond.

We had a lovely drive back to Stirling through the Scottish countryside. We had dinner in a local pub where Claire got up the courage to order haggis! Only as a side dish in case it was not edible. There was no evidence of what it had been cooked in and was quite nice. We can leave Scotland with a clear conscience.
