Windemere to York

Our last day in the Lakes District was another lovely day. We headed up into the hills again to visit White Scar Cave, the longest show cave in England. We had to wait a while for the next tour so drove further up the road to see the Ribblehead Viaduct, built in the 1800s for the Settle to Carlisle Railway.

The cave tour was great, luckily they provided us with hard hats, they saved Peter's head at least 4 times. There were some very low passages. It is a living cave with most of the walkway built over the stream that runs through it.

Claire finished the day with a cruise on Lake Windemere.

Today we drove from Windemere to York. It was our first overcast day in a while but the scenery through the Dales was wonderful.

We visited Brough Castle. We aren't sure if it is pronounced brough, brough or brough!

Next stop was Richmond Castle and by then the rain had well and truly set in. It was finally our chance to pick up our Heritage pass so we braved the rain.

We were going to visit Fountains Abbey and the Studley Royal Water Gardens but decided it wouldn't be much fun in the rain. Instead we pushed on to York. Driving on the M1 on a Friday before the Bank Holiday weekend in the rain was an interesting experience. We found a great pub across the road for our evening meal and didn't venture further than that. Tomorrow should be a finer day so we are off to explore York.
